Being on the back of a horse allows the rider to get close to game which is undisturbed by human intrusion.  How about galloping through the clear shallows of the Okavango Delta during a morning ride or cantering across the Maasai Mara with giraffe and zebra?

 

There are also many places where it is possible to enjoy spectacular scenery from horseback, including up on the Nyika Plateau in Malawi, and in the Waterberg Mountains of South Africa.

Or sail in luxury between the East African islands on a fully restored classic schooner.  Built 95 years ago in Holland as a herring fishing boat and now  beautifully refitted and maintained, the elegant schooner, Midsummer, has sailed down from the Mediterranean to be based off Stone Town on Zanzibar.

With a crew of six, including  a chef, and three cabins for passengers, one double and two twins each with a shower or bath, Midsummer will ply from Zanzibar to the north of Pemba   Island twice a month.  The leisurely voyage will take four days each way, mooring in secluded bays for diving, snorkelling and exploring. You can join her for as many days as you choose and she can also be booked as a private charter, perhaps to sail to Lamu in Kenya and  even Madagascar is within reach!

It must not be forgotten that Africa boasts some of the most spectacular natural wonders in the world.  Include an excursion to the Victoria Falls while in Zambia or Zimbabwe to experience first hand the ‘smoke that thunders’, make a dawn visit to the dunes at Sossusvlei to catch them at their most beautiful, or go to the Ngorongoro Crater, often known as the largest natural zoo as it is teeming with wildlife.credit: Arabella Lakin
