Spend a day unwinding at NGONG HOUSE, a family-owned lodge on the outskirts of Nairobi, set in lush tropical gardens with views of the Ngong Hills.

The individual tree houses with four-poster beds and stained glass windows make this a special experience and an ideal start to your Kenyan safari.

The next day, fly to Meru National Park where the Adamsons released their lions.  Stay at ELSA'S KOPJE on Mughwango Hill, the site of George Adamson's first camp. The open-fronted rooms allow magnificent views of the sunrise from a king-size bed!

The park straddles the equator resulting in an overlap of species not usually found together and you’ll have the chance to walk and take game drives after dark as well as by day in a traditional open safari vehicle. Hilltop sundowners are a perfect end to the day.

Move on to the renowned Maasai Mara Game Reserve, to a delightful camp with a genuine bush feel to it. The spacious, luxurious tents at
IL MORAN are furnished with beautiful handcrafted beds and chairs.

Each has a private verandah overlooking the river which is ideal for quiet bird spotting and candlelit dinners, a relaxed way to finish a day that may have involved close encounters with the Mara’s prolific wildlife while on bush walks and game drives.

Another thrill is to take a hot air balloon flight, giving a bird’s eye perspective to the park.

Kenya’s Rift Valley lakes offer some more wonderful locations to stay, from Turkana in the remote north also aptly known as the Jade Sea, to Baringo’s pale terracotta coloured silt waters, and the pink-fringed flamingo lakes of Bogoria and Nakuru. Makena’s Hills is a superb lodge on the escarpment, looking down into the valley with views of Lake Baringo in the distance.
