You
will be arriving in a specially chartered light aircraft which
will land close to the world’s highest sand dunes for
a spectacular start to this very special itinerary. Kulala
Desert Lodge has a superb location near the great
dune sea with wonderful views of the shifting mountains of
sand from your private verandah. Originally designed, comfortable
tented rooms each have an open deck above the bathroom where
you can sleep out under the stars!
Dawn visits to SOSSUSVLEI and Deadvlei will
be organised and can be combined with a visit to Sesriem Canyon
and a hearty brunch in the shade of an acacia tree. For a
beautiful treat, take a balloon safari over the desert at
sunrise and watch the changing colours and shadows.
The
colours of the landscape change as you fly north to mountainous
DAMARALAND to stay at Mowani Mountain
Camp, cleverly designed to blend into the boulder-strewn
landscape.
The area has been inhabited by Bushmen for several thousand
years, their artefacts and rock paintings providing evidence
that has been subject to much scholastic study. A local guide
can help you interpret the amazing rock engravings and will
lead you in search of the desert elephants which exist in
the harsh conditions of the dry river beds. Nearby, a ‘petrified
forest’ is well worth a visit. It is thought that some
250 million years ago logs that were being washed down by
a river became stranded on a sand bank, providing ideal conditions
for the strange petrification process.
You will spend your final night in Namibia at the charming
Hilltop House in WINDHOEK before
flying to Botswana and straight on to the Okavango Delta.
Your
next stop will be in the MOREMI GAME RESERVE
on the eastern side of the delta. This is a beautiful area
of permanent water, seasonal floodplains, open savannah and
riverine forest - varied habitats that teem with game. You
can take game drives in open vehicles in the reserve and your
explorations will also be by mokoro (dug out canoe) and motor
boat along the deep water channels.
Xakanaxa (pronounced ka-ka-na-ka) is in
a prime location on the banks of the Khwai river. The character
is of an original African bush camp but with every comfort
you could wish including a comprehensive library and a small
pool. The spacious tents are furnished in the 'old safari'
style, with only lanterns and candle light at night to add
to the authentic atmosphere.
Your
final three nights are at Pom Pom Camp in
a private concession deep in the heart of the OKAVANGO
DELTA where mokoro expeditions, boat safaris and
traditional day and night drives are on offer to view the
abundance of game and the prolific birdlife. This attractively
designed camp offering a true Okavango wilderness experience
provides a fitting finale to a journey of contrasting environments.
