It
is just a short flight from Nairobi to MERU NATIONAL
PARK which is now thriving after serious poaching
in the 1980s and it is once again home to the Big Five! Other
game in the area include Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe,
leopard, gerenuk and lesser kudu. The three underlying principals
here - charismatic guides, a passion and respect for Africa's
wildlife along with high standards of both comfort and service
- ensure that your stay at Offbeat Safaris’
Meru Camp will tick a lot of boxes.
The camp is small and traditional with each tent being comfortably
furnished and lit by 24 hour solar power. Informal dining
is around a campfire or hosted in the mess tent. Days are
tailored to suit you and activities include day and evening
game drives, walking safaris with armed guides, bush breakfasts,
picnics and sundowners and fly fishing in the local rivers.
This area of Kenya gets quite hot during the dry season so,
after an active morning in the bush, what can be better than
coming back to camp to relax and cool off in the swimming
pool while watching the wildlife as it comes to drink from
the Bisanadi River below.
A
classic tented safari camp in the game-rich plains of the
northern MAASAI MARA provides a relaxed and
friendly home. A maximum of twenty-two guests can stay in
Kicheche Main Camp and the majority of the
tents are in secluded positions overlooking the plains and
nearby hills while others are closer together for families
or friends. Unfenced and secluded, animals can wander through
camp at any time but your game viewing will also be by vehicle
and on foot and you can choose to take with you picnic breakfasts,
lunches and sundowners.
Kicheche’s Maasai guides will not only be willing to
share their wealth of knowledge about the prolific flora and
fauna but are also proud of their traditions, their past and
their future in our ever-changing world. During your stay
you might like to visit their local village or school and
perhaps offer support through the award-winning Kicheche Community
Project. While encouraging the preservation of the environment,
it aims to improve the welfare of the community through better
health and education facilities.
A
complete contrast awaits you on the historic SWAHILI
ISLAND OF LAMU. In Shela Village at the intimate
hotel, Peponi’s, you can be as active
or inactive as you wish. Each room is individually decorated
and has a private area to sit, perfect for enjoying the glorious
sea views, while the lovely swimming pool provides a peaceful
atmosphere for total relaxation.
Delicious food is cooked to order and there is the opportunity
to sample a traditional Swahili dinner, sitting on the floor
on large, comfortable cushions with a magnificent brass platter
as the ‘table’.
If
you get restless, you can explore the narrow streets and markets
of the main town where the only car on the island is used
by the local Commissioner to drive a few yards from home to
his office, and donkeys provide the other means of transport!
Just around the corner from the hotel lies eight miles of
beautiful sandy beach. Dingy sailing, wind surfing, water
skiing, snorkelling, and fishing are all available and scuba
diving is possible between November and March. A sunset dhow
cruise will round off a wonderful holiday.
