Karisia Walking Safaris tent by Ewaso river, Laikipia Plateau KenyaYour adventure begins on the LAIKIPIA PLATEAU at Tumaren, home to Kerry and James and the base for their camel safaris. A gentle afternoon walk, mountain bike ride or game dive will help you get a feel for the country before setting out the next day for a three night walking safari. This is led by Samburu guides with camels as ‘beasts of burden’ carrying the equipment, tents, guest luggage and all-important food.

Each day while your guides lead you with some of the camels in search of game including giraffe, zebra and several species of gazelle, the rest will take a direct route to the next camp. Magically, lunch will be waiting and you can then rest and relax or play some games. Later in the afternoon, head out for another walk to a pretty spot for sundowners before returning to camp for a delicious dinner. Your safari tents will have everything needed for a comfortable night under the African sky while you listen to the animals calling.

Kariasa Walking Safaris tent interior, Laikipia Plateau KenyaAs you walk, you will be looking from vantage points for elephants and you may be lucky enough to catch sight of shyer species such as kudu, eland, hyena, bat-eared fox or hartebeest. Away from roads and the commonly worn tourist trails, you will really feel in touch with the bush. Hear, see and smell the land and natural history around you and learn about the local culture and tribes from your guides.

On the third day, after another hearty breakfast, you will set off towards the Ewaso river where there are tempting and safe pools in which to cool off. From this beautiful site on the banks of the river and a final night’s camp, you will take leave of your guides and carry away memories to last a lifetime.

Zebra Overlooking Migration (Serian)A light aircraft will take you to the MAASAI MARA which has fantastic game viewing throughout the year and will provide an experience to keep even the youngest guest bursting with excitement. Here we have chosen Serian, the bush home of filmmaker and guide Alex Walker, to be your base. The staff and guides will design each day to suit your pace and age with walks and game drives to seek out the big game. Other activities such as mountain biking, off road driving, archery and fishing are all available.

At camp there are eight huge tented rooms each with a ‘bush’ bathroom. The ‘mess’ area is complete with an indoor fireplace and an outdoors deck, with an expansive view of the Mara river and the Oloololo escarpment. This truly is a gem of a location with service and attention to match.

Boogie boarding Manda Bay KenyaFrom the excitement of the bush to a perfect beach location on the SWAHILI COAST - an idyllic island in the Lamu archipelago, Manda Bay lies in the calm inshore waters on a long sandy protected beach. The comfortable cottages are constructed from local materials in keeping with the landscape and personal attention to detail is a vital part of the discrete service.

Manda Bay from the sea (Chris Durham)The enthusiastic owners are full of ideas to keep guests happy and entertained. There is a large games room and swimming pool situated beside the beach and close to the watersports base. Surrounded by miles of palm fringed silky white sand beaches and intriguing creeks, you can mix relaxation with a variety of adventurous activities which include deep sea fishing, in search of marlin and sailfish, windsurfing, water skiing and scuba diving. Take a cruise on the lodge’s traditional dhow and you could even be rewarded with a sighting of dolphin and turtles while snorkelling in the warm, gentle and clear waters. After dark Andy, one of the owners, will help you explore the night sky as he picks out less familiar constellations amongst the stars before the younger members of your family wander sleepily off to bed.

and what about?

Depending on the level of toughness (or otherwise!) you seek, through Kerry and James’ Walking Safari Company, Karisia, a safari itinerary can be planned around your interests. Natural history is a major focus of their trips and as biologists, photographers and experienced safari guides, they can provide a safari that you will cherish forever.
