Mchenja outside (Norman Carr Safaris)Norman Carr's name is legendary in the history of Zambian wildlife conservation and the foundation of the walking safari. His legacy lives on in his lodges and camps in the SOUTH LUANGWA VALLEY, of which Mchenja Camp is one, all offering excellent accommodation, guiding and service.

Set on the banks of the Luangwa river with just five stylishly designed tented rooms each set under its own thatched roof, Mchenja is a great place to start a wildlife safari. Explore the surrounding area on foot with a guide or go further afield on a game drive in an area renowned for its leopard sightings.

Tafika Camp (Remote Africa) South Luangwa National Park ZambiaFrom here you will drive to Tafika Camp in the north of the park, keeping an eye out for game on the way. The five spacious guest chalets are constructed from thatch and reed and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.

Along with daily game drives, you can visit a local village, take a scenic flight in a microlight and experience the thrill of night drives.

missing imageTake to the air again and fly to the NORTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK to Mwaleshi Camp, the sister camp of Tafika, in a truly remote wilderness area known for its lion, herds of buffalo and Cookson’s wildebeest. The wildlife action will contrast sharply with the peace and simplicity of the camp. Comfortable rooms have been carefully handcrafted around trees from local materials and you are guaranteed to dine well because somehow, from a simple kitchen, 5 star meals are conjured up!
You will explore the area on foot with the camp manager acting as guide and assisted by a National Parks scout.

Mumbo Island Tent Malawi (Kayak Africa)Next you transfer back to Mfuwe and onwards into Malawi to LIVINGSTONE’S ‘LAKE OF STARS’ and peaceful Mumbo Island. If you are feeling particularly energetic, you can paddle yourself out to the island in a kayak, otherwise travel by boat which will, in any case, be transporting your bags.

Built of timber, thatch and canvas, and perched on high rocks overlooking the water, this little island camp has comfortably furnished tents with shaded decks, hammocks and hot bucket showers. It blends with the African bush to create a ‘Robinson Crusoe’ atmosphere of rustic charm.

In addition to kayaking, the cool, clear fresh waters of the lake offer excellent swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving - what a location in which to try any of these without salt water, tides and currents to contend with! And watch out for the playful Cape clawless and spotted-neck otters that regularly join guests as they snorkel or swim.

and what about?

If paddling your own canoe appeals, consider combining this with game viewing in remote areas along the Lower Zambezi. Safari Par Excellence, one of southern Africa's leading adventure and safari operators, offers canoe safaris sleeping on islands or the banks of the river. If you would prefer to explore this area by canoe but sleep in a proper bed, make the renowned Chongwe River Camp your base or even the stunning, private Chongwe River House.
