To
give you a relaxed start, you’ll be met at Windhoek
Airport and driven into town to Olive Grove.
An afternoon safari briefing will give you plenty of useful
information and an opportunity to go over your route before
a good night’s sleep at this charming and stylish little
guest house.
Set off the next morning to the NAMIB NAUKLUFT NATIONAL
PARK and Desert Homestead. The thatched
chalets of this friendly lodge are set in an expansive grassy
valley sheltered by the Nubib, Tsaris and Naukluft mountains
and have a spectacular views reaching as far as the distant
dunes of the Namib Desert. You will have the opportunity to
visit these great dunes surrounding Sossusvlei and Deadvlei
and, if you are feeling very energetic, you can climb Big
Daddy - the largest in the area. Other activities include
horse riding, sunset walks and nature drives.
Drive
northwest to SWAKOPMUND, a coastal town of
unusual architecture with strong Germanic influences. Two
nights at the centrally situated Hansa Hotel gives
you ample time to try a variety of activities including deep
sea fishing, dolphin and seal cruises, quad biking on the
dunes and supper at the famous Tug Restaurant which serves
the most delicious fresh seafood.
Carry
on up the coast taking the day to drive to DAMARALAND
via Hentiesbaai and the Cape Cross seal colony and then inland
towards Twyfelfontein. A little further on is Damaraland
Camp, a simple, remote but very comfortable tented
camp set in the fascinating red and purple volcanic landscape
of the Etendeka lava flows. Explore the area with knowledgeable
local guides, searching for desert adapted elephants in the
Huab river valley and visiting sites of ancient rock art,
and maybe take a short dramatic sun-downer hike on one of
the mountains.
Drive
on north east into ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK where
the permanent water sources make it Namibia’s prime
game viewing destination and also support fantastic bird life.
You will stay at Okaukuejo Rest Camp, set
within the park and overlooking a large permanent waterhole
which receives regular visits from elephants and black rhino
as well as numerous antelope. The guest chalets are very comfortable
and you have the choice of either taking meals in the restaurant
or in your chalet. There is a swimming pool which is perfect
to cool off in.
During your stay either drive yourselves around the park
or join guided game drives. The waterhole is floodlit at night
so after dinner it is fun to sit and watch the nocturnal visitors
and their interactions.
As
you start heading back towards Windhoek, spend a couple of
nights in the ERONGO MOUNTAINS, an amazing
area where the desert, mountain and bush ecosystems combine.
Here, in a secluded valley, the ten luxury tented chalets
of Erongo Wilderness Lodge have breathtaking
views and are set in a dramatic landscape of granite boulders.
The local guides will share their wealth of knowledge of
the local fauna, flora, and folklore as you take walks over
granite domes, through rich valleys and on nature drives.
There is also a healthy bird population around the lodge and
you may choose to enjoy their company as you relax by the
pool before the drive back to Windhoek and the homeward journey.
