KRUGER
NATIONAL PARK, synonymous in many people’s
minds with game viewing in southern Africa, now has an infrastructure
that is too well developed for us to describe it as a true
wilderness. Thus we have selected two privately owned lodges
in huge blocks of bushveld with prolific wild life shared
by a limited number of visitors!
First to Garonga in the greater MAKALALI
CONSERVANCY situated west of the Kruger National
Park. Bernie, the charming host, welcomes guests to his delightful
lodge and provides an unrivalled holistic wildlife experience.
Activities include game drives, wilderness walks, sleep-outs,
outdoor bush-baths and aromatherapy and reflexology sessions.
The
light and airy tented rooms are situated overlooking a dry
riverbed frequented by game, each with a wooden deck complete
with hammock.
Nottens Bush Camp, in the SABI SANDS
GAME RESERVE to the south, is run by the Notten family
and has been a firm favourite of ours for many years. It has
accommodation in elegantly styled suites and offers a warm
welcome combined with very professional guiding. Animals are
attracted year round
to the water of the Sabi river making game viewing, in traditional
safari vehicles by day and after dark and also on foot, very
rewarding.
The camp has a magical rustic atmosphere which is enhanced
by the use of candle light and lanterns. Gilly’s fine
cuisine, the inviting pool, a wonderful massage at Nature’s
Spa and starry nights around the log fire all add to the pleasure
of your stay.
After a thrilling time in the bush, you will fly to CAPE
TOWN where you can unwind at Constantia Uitsig,
a charming
hotel in the heart of a working vineyard. The delightful rooms
face onto an immaculate garden and the three restaurants are
world renowned.
From here you can explore the Cape Peninsula and the city,
or stay closer to base and enjoy the gentle scenery and outstanding
food and wine. A hire car will be delivered to you.
No itinerary for South Africa is complete without a visit
to the Wine Region to admire the charming Cape Dutch architecture
of the vineyards and, perhaps, to enjoy the product of the
vines!
Built
in this distinctive style, Roggeland Country House,
family-owned and run, is within a short distance of both FRANSCHHOEK
and STELLENBOSCH. Gordon Mincke and his two
daughters offer accommodation in the beautifully converted
farm buildings with high ceilings, thick stone walls, every
comfort and a homely atmosphere.
Dinner in the evening is a sumptuous four course affair
with excellent regional wines chosen to compliment each dish.
By spending the night in SWELLENDAM at The
Hideaway while travelling along the Garden Route,
you can take the scenic back road via Oudtshoorn rather than
tearing along the busy N2.
Stop for a leisurely lunch - we will have plenty of suggestions
for you – and then drive on to Kurland,
a beautiful polo estate and a real sanctuary just outside
PLETTENBERG BAY.
With
the activities in and around Knysna and the Tsitsikamma Reserve
all within easy reach, this is a good location in which to
complete a holiday to remember. There are beautiful forest
and coastal walks to be taken, you can picnic in spectacular
spots and fish in the lagoons, laze on the beach and even
enjoy some adrenaline pumping activites including bungy jumping
and sea kayaking. Golfers will bowled over by the quality
and number of courses open to them and dolphins surfing the
waves off the beautiful beaches of Plettenberg and Natures
Valley will be just one of many delightful images to take
home.
