Ngong House boat bed, Nairobi KenyaSpend a day unwinding at Ngong House, a family-owned lodge on the outskirts of NAIROBI, set in lush tropical gardens with views of the Ngong Hills.

The individual tree houses with four-poster beds and stained glass windows make this a special experience and an ideal start to your Kenyan safari.

Elsa's Kopje, Meru National Park KenyaThe next day, fly to MERU NATIONAL PARK where the Adamsons released their lions. Stay at Elsa's Kopje on Mughwango Hill, the site of George Adamson's first camp. The open-front rooms allow magnificent views over the charming park, especially of the sunrise from the comfort of a king-size bed!

Thirteen rivers running through the park provide lush bands of vegetation and its location, straddling the equator, results in an overlap of species not usually found together. You’ll have the chance to go on a game walk as well as take game drives by day and after dark in a traditional open safari vehicle. Hilltop sundowners are a perfect end to the day.

Loisaba Star Bed, Laikipia Plateau KenyaMore breathtaking views await you from the top of the escarpment of the LAIKIPIA PLATEAU, overlooking the Rift Valley and extending to Mount Kenya and all the way to the Mathews Range.

Laikipia is inhabited by an ethnically diverse community including the Maasai, Kikuyu and Samburu and the amazing Loisaba Star Beds - part of the Loisaba private ranch and where you will spend the next two nights - are a joint community partnership. Each Star Bed is on a handcrafted wooden raised platform partially covered with a thatched roof. The four-poster beds, complete with insect netting, can be wheeled onto the open deck area for a blissful sleep under the vast African sky with only the stars as a roof.

Northern species of game thrive here including gerenuk, Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe. Viewing can be from the back of a camel as well as on foot or by vehicle.

Il Moran, Govenors Camps Maasai Mara KenyaMove on to the renowned MAASAI MARA GAME RESERVE with perhaps the most exceptional game viewing in East Africa, to a delightful camp with a genuine bush feel to it. The spacious, luxurious tents at Il Moran are furnished with beautiful handcrafted beds and chairs.

Each has a private verandah overlooking the river, ideal for quiet bird spotting and candlelit dinners, a relaxed way to finish a day which will have involved encounters with the Mara’s prolific wildlife while on bush walks and game drives. Another thrill is to take a hot air balloon flight, giving a bird’s eye perspective to the park.

Matemwe Retreats roof terrace, ZanzibarThe view from your private roof terrace at Matemwe Retreats on ZANZIBAR will be of the sparkling azure sea across to the little island of Mnemba. The level of service, with close attention to detail, makes this a perfect final destination.

With only three wonderful villas, spend the last few days of your holiday blissfully cocooned. Dine in the privacy of your garden or roof terrace or, should you wish, with company in the dining room of the main lodge next door. The private beach right in front of your villa completes the experience.

and what about?

For even greater diversity of game, add a few days in Rwanda, easily reached from Nairobi, trekking mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park and chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest. Whilst on Zanzibar, spend a couple of exciting days in historic Stone Town exploring the spice markets and narrow streets, marvelling at the carved doors and minarets.
