Your
adventures begin from the moment a guide from Selous
Impala meets you at the airstrip and drives you through
the game-rich country of the vast SELOUS GAME RESERVE
to camp. With the emphasis on personal service and flexibility,
a stay here can be arranged to suit guests’ interests.
The meandering Rufiji river, with its network of channels,
connecting lakes and lagoons, makes for good game viewing
by boat but game drives and walking excursions are also available.
Tents
are set on raised hardwood platforms and each has a private
verandah overlooking the river. The large central area of
camp under a huge thatch adds to the very relaxed atmosphere
and there is a pool to cool off in.
A short flight and another game drive will bring you to Mdonya
Old River, a small simple camp in the heart of the
RUAHA NATIONAL PARK with the same flexible
approach to the excellent game viewing. Completely tented
so it can be removed leaving the wilderness untouched, both
the dining and sitting areas overlook the dry river bed which
is used by game as a corridor. You may be tempted to just
sit in camp with a book and a pair of binoculars!
Accommodation is in traditional safari tents with twin or
double beds, complete with bathroom and a shower open to the
stars.
The
immensely rich marine life and the fact that the island is
little known attracted us to MAFIA. Pole Pole,
whose name means 'take it easy' in Swahili, is a wonderful
place to unwind before returning home.
The accommodation is in extremely comfortable simple wooden
bungalows set under the palm trees in grounds which slope
down to the beach.
There
is an excellent dive centre for scuba enthusiasts and fantastic
snorkelling for those who prefer to stay on the surface. Depending
on the tides, there are daily optional excursions to a reef
or sand bar with a picnic lunch included or to Chole Island
- the oldest inhabited settlement in the archipelago, with
the ruins of some Arab buildings used by the Germans during
the First World War.
This itinerary offers extremely good value for money and
each place, being owned and run by Italians, ensures not only
excellent hospitality but amazing food as well!
