Your
adventure begins the moment your guide meets you at the airport
and drives you through Uganda’s rolling green hills
to the charming LAKE MBURO NATIONAL PARK,
an extension of the Tanzania plains with herds of zebra, impala,
eland and other ungulates. A comfortable night under canvas
and thatch await you at the peaceful Mihingo Lodge
where the ten tented rooms have been carefully placed for
seclusion, some to give 360° views over the plains, others
in a forest setting or with views of Lake Mburo.
Head to BWINDI IMPENETRABLE FOREST, best
known as the home of several families of mountain gorilla.
On the south side of Bwindi, the Nkuringo group of gorillas
has been difficult to visit but, with the new Clouds
Mountain Gorilla Lodge as your base, it is just a
short walk to the starting point of the trek. The lodge with
stone built cottages is high on the Nteko Ridge with breathtaking
views over the thick tree-top canopy of the forest to the
volcanoes beyond.
Your
trek to find the gorillas can take a couple of hours and does
require a degree of fitness due to fairly steep, muddy paths.
As if the magical time with these gentle giants is not sufficient,
your exertions will be rewarded back at the lodge. An excellent
meal made from local produce accompanied by a good wine, the
comfort of soft armchairs in front of an open fire and a warm
duvet on your bed await!
Drive
north to QUEEN ELIZABETH PARK where you will
spend the next two nights at Mweya Safari Lodge,
with spectacular views over the famous Kazinga Channel and
Lake Edward with its large hippo population.
This park owes its great variety of game to the diverse ecosystems
and there is the possibility of seeing a tree-climbing lion
draped from a low-limbed fig tree. You can trek to find chimpanzees,
take a boat trip along the channel and visit the huge cave
which is home to bats and a python.
A
scenic drive out of the park to Kibali will bring you to Ndali
Lodge, perched on the rim of an extinct volcano which
has since filled with water to become Lake Nyinambuga. All
eight cottages have fabulous views of the Rwenzoris, the ‘Mountains
of the Moon’ and at night the dining room is spectacularly
festooned with candles!
KIBALE FOREST NATIONAL PARK is home to the
largest concentration of chimpanzees in Africa as well as
other primates. The birdlife in the area is also rewarding.
After
an exciting morning walk, continue on through the Rift Valley
to SEMLIKI WILDLIFE RESERVE where, in a private
concession, the beautiful Semliki Safari Lodge
is located. In this area there is prolific birdlife with a
good chance of seeing the rare shoebill stork as well as finding
chimpanzees. Nearby Lake Albert also offers very exciting
fishing for both expert and novice anglers.
Set off early towards Kampala and overnight at the lovely
Emin Pasha before your flight home.
