A tropical Département of France, this small island appeals to those who are looking for an Indian Ocean experience with a difference! There is magnificent scenery in the mountainous interior, an active volcano and a wonderful rugged coastline with beautiful protected coves. An extraordinary mix of sub-tropical and alpine, activity and relaxation awaits...
Weather
Tropical around the coast and temperate in the interior. October to March is hot (up to 28°C on the coast) and wet with the possibility of cyclones. The west coast, protected from the prevailing south-east trade winds by the mountains, is drier than the east.
Highlights
Indian Ocean, every shade of aquamarine, sapphire, opal and emerald, from the darkness beyond the reefs to the palest translucent waters of the protected lagoons
Particularly spectactular scenery as a result of the island's volcanic history - moon-like lava fields around the active volcano contrast starkly to the sheer cliffs and cascading waterfalls of three extinct craters
Dense, lush montane forests harbouring a healthy bird population, some species endemic to the island, and orchids flowering mainly December to March
